1.2 Drive SystemsThe ST7000 offers a choice of Mechanical orHydraulic Drive Units. All vessels with hydraulicsteering will require a hydraulic drive unit (seesection 1.2.3).Mechanical steering systems may be driven witheither a rotary or linear drive unit. If space permitsthe linear drive unit provides the simplestinstallation by connecting directly to the rudderstock tiller arm. It may also be used to powersteer the vessel if steering linkage failure occurs.1.2.1 Rotary Drive UnitsThe Autohelm Rotary Drive Units provide smoothpowerful steering commands with virtually silentoperation.A rugged electric motor drives a precisionepicyclic gearbox via a high tensile belt drive. Anelectronic clutch is totally fail-safe yet transmitshigh torque loads with no slippage.The drive units can be mounted in any attitudesimplifying installation.6
