27START-UPPROCEDURESLighting the BoilerSafe-lighting and other performance criteria were metwith the gas manifold and control assembly providedon the boiler when the boiler underwent tests specifiedin the latest edition of the ANSI-Z21.13/CSA 4.9Standard.For Standing Pilot ModelsA. This boiler has a pilot which must be lighted byhand. When lighting the pilot, follow these instruc-tions exactly.B. BEFORE LIGHTING Smell all around the boilerarea for gas. Be sure to smell next to the floorbecause some gas is heavier than air and will set-tle on the floor.WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS• Do not try to light any appliance.• Do not touch any electric switch;• Do not use any phone in your building.• Immediately call your gas supplier from a neigh-bor's phone. Follow the gas supplier's instructions.• If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the firedepartment.C. Use only your hand to push in, move or turn thegas control knob or lever. Never use tools. If theknob or lever will not push in, move or turn byhand, don't try to repair it. Call a qualified servicetechnician. Force or attempted repair may result ina fire or explosion.D. Do not use this boiler if any part has been underwater. Immediately call a qualified service techni-cian to inspect the boiler and to replace any part ofthe control system and any gas control which hasbeen under water.Filling the SystemFlush system before putting into operation to ensurethat foreign material does not damage pump seals. Fillsystem with water. Purge all air from the system usingpurge valve sequence. After system is purged of air, lower system pressure. Open valves for normal sys-tem operation, fill system through feed pressureregulator to minimum 12 psi. Manually open air venton the compression tank until water appears, thenclose vent.On multiple-zone systems, purge each zone separate-ly. Isolate the other zones while one zone is beingpurged of air.Checking the CirculatorBefore lighting the boiler and after system is filled, make sure that circulator is operating properly. Manualgas valve should be off. By adjusting the wall thermo-stat to the maximum setting, circulator should runimmediately and allow water to flow through the boilerand the entire system.CAUTION: Propane gas is heavier than air andsinks to the ground. Exercise extreme care in lightingboiler in confined areas.WARNING: If you do not follow these instructionsexactly, a fire or explosion may result causingproperty damage, personal injury or loss of life.CAUTION: In case of a prolonged power failureduring freezing weather conditions, boiler and pipingsystem must be drained completely to avoid possibledamage to the heating system.NOTE: Circulator motor supplied with the boilerdoes not require lubrication.
