33Flues supported only by flashing and extended abovethe roof more than 5 ft should be securely guyed orbraced to withstand snow and wind loads.The air inlet opening MUST be installed 1 ft above theroof line or above normal snow levels that might ob-struct combustion air flow. This dimension is critical tothe correct operation of the heater and venting systemand reduces the chance of blockage from snow. Thevent cap must have a minimum 3 ft vertical clearancefrom the air inlet opening.Outdoor InstallationOutdoor models are self-venting when installed withthe optional factory-supplied outdoor vent kit and re-quire no additional vent piping. A special vent cap, flowswitch cover and air intake hood are provided in accor-dance with CSA requirements, which must be installeddirectly on the heater. Correct clearances can befound earlier in this section.Care must be taken when locating the heater out-doors, because the flue gases discharged from thevent cap can condense as they leave the cap.Improper location can result in damage to adjacentstructures or building finish. For maximum efficiencyand safety, the following precautions must beobserved:1. Outdoor models must be installed outdoors andmust use the outdoor vent cap, flow switch coverand air intake hood available from the manufac-turer (sales order option D-11).2. Periodically check venting system. The heater’sventing areas must never be obstructed in anyway and minimum clearances must be observedto prevent restriction of combustion and ventilationair. Keep area clear and free of combustible andflammable materials.3. Do not locate adjacent to any window, door walk-way, or gravity air intake. The vent must belocated a minimum of 4 ft horizontally from suchareas.4. Install above grade level and above normal snowlevels.5. Vent terminal must be at least 3 ft above anyforced air inlet located within 10 ft.6. Adjacent brick or masonry surfaces must be pro-tected with a rust-resistant sheet metal plate.Freeze ProtectionWhen installing this heater in an outdoor location thatis susceptible to freezing, sales order option B-22must be ordered. The B-22 option energizes theheater pump at a preset temperature drop to circulatewater and reduces the possibility of freezing and dam-aging the heat exchanger or headers.ControlsNOTE: Condensate can freeze on the vent cap.Frozen condensate on the vent cap can result in ablocked flue condition.NOTE: The vent cap, flow switch cover and airintake hood must be furnished by the heatermanufacturer in accordance with its listing (salesorder option D-11).WARNING: Installation, adjustment and service ofheater controls, including timing of various operatingfunctions, must be performed by a qualified installer,service agency or the gas supplier. Failure to do somay result in control damage, heater malfunction,property damage, personal injury, or death.WARNING: Turn off the power to the heater beforeinstallation, adjustment or service of the CPW boardor any heater controls. Failure to do so may result inboard damage, heater malfunction, propertydamage, personal injury, or death.CAUTION: This appliance has provisions to beconnected to more than one supply source. Toreduce the risk of electric shock, disconnect all suchconnections before servicing.CAUTION: Risk of electric shock: More than onedisconnect switch may be required to de-energizethe equipment before servicing.
