Software RequirementsTo perform an installation, the following software components must be available:• Base operating system — RHN Satellite Server is supported with Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 2.1Update 5 or later, Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 3 Update 3 or later, or Red Hat Enterprise LinuxAS 4 only. The operating system can be installed from disc, local ISO image, kickstart, or any ofthe methods supported by Red Hat but must contain certain packages not included in a standardinstallation.• Satellite installation disc or ISO — this contains the RHN Satellite Server Installation Program.• Channel content — All software packages and data exported for all entitled Red Hat channels. Thiscontent may be loaded directly on the Satellite after installation using the RHN Satellite Synchro-nization Tool or obtained from your Red Hat representative if synchronization isn’t possible, suchas in a disconnected environment.ImportantIf you plan to obtain Monitoring-level service, you must install your RHN Satellite Server on Red HatEnterprise Linux AS 3 Update 3 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4. These are the only supportedbase operating systems for Satellites serving Monitoring-entitled systems.Each version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS requires additional packages to support RHN SatelliteServer. The following sections identify Red Hat’s recommended methods for obtaining the desiredpackage set for each version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS. Installing packages other than thosespecified can lead to package conflicts.2.1.1. Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4 PackagesTo install RHN Satellite Server on Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4, first obtain the required packagesin one of the following ways.WarningSecurity-enhanced Linux (SELinux) must be disabled in Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4 prior toinstallation of RHN Satellite Server. To do this during CD or ISO image installation, select Disabledwhen presented with options for SELinux support. To do this for kickstart installation, include thecommand selinux --disabled or wait for the install to complete, edit the /etc/selinux/configfile to read SELINUX=disabled and reboot the system.When installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4 via CD or ISO image, select the following packagegroups:
