Health and Safety Information130Health and Safety InformationExposure to Radio Frequency (RF) SignalsYour wireless phone is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designedand manufactured not to exceed the emission limits for exposure toradio frequency (RF) energy set by the Federal CommunicationsCommission (FCC) of the U.S. Government. These limits are part ofcomprehensive guidelines and establish permitted levels of RFenergy for the general population. The guidelines are based on thesafety standards that were developed by independent scientificorganizations through periodic and thorough evaluation of scientificstudies. The standards include a substantial safety margin designed to assurethe safety of all persons, regardless of age and health. The exposure standard for wireless phones employs a unit ofmeasurement known as Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). The SARlimit recommended by the FCC is 1.6W/kg.*SAR tests are conducted using standard operating positionsspecified by the FCC with the phone transmitting at its highestcertified power level in all tested frequency bands. Although the SARis determined at the highest certified power level, the actual SAR levelof the phone while operating can be well below the maximum value. This is because the phone is designed to operate at multiple powerlevels so as to use only the power required to reach the network. In*. In the U.S. and Canada, the SAR limit for mobilephones used by the public is 1.6 watts/kg (W/kg) aver-aged over one gram of tissue. The standard incorpo-rates a substantial margin of safety to give additionalprotection for the public and to account for any varia-tions in measurements.
