50Section 5Changing the Text Input ModeWhen using your phone, you will often need to enter text, such as when storing a name in your Phonebook, creatingyour personal greeting or scheduling events on yourcalendar. You can enter alphanumeric characters by usingyour phone’s keypad.Your phone has the following text input modes:• ABC mode: this mode allows you to enter letters by pressingthe key labeled with the letter you want. How many times youpress the key determines which letter or number appears.• T9 mode: this mode allows you to enter words with only onekeystroke per letter. Each key on the keypad has more than oneletter; for example, pressing can enter J, K, or L. However, the T9 mode automatically compares the series of keystrokesyou make with an internal linguistic dictionary to determine themost likely word, thus requiring far fewer keystrokes than thetraditional ABC mode.• Number mode: this mode allows you to enter numbers.• Symbol mode: this mode allows you to enter symbols, such aspunctuation marks. When you are in a field that allows characters to beentered, you will notice the text input mode indicator onthe display.Example: Writing a text message.
