Section 12: Health and Safety Information 177Consumer Information on Wireless PhonesSection 12• If you must conduct extended conversations by wirelessphone every day, you could place more distancebetween your body and the source of the RF, since theexposure level drops off dramatically with distance. Forexample, you could use a headset and carry thewireless phone away from your body or use a wirelessphone connected to a remote antenna.Again, the scientific data do not demonstrate thatwireless phones are harmful. But if you areconcerned about the RF exposure from theseproducts, you can use measures like those describedabove to reduce your RF exposure from wireless phoneuse. What about children using wireless phones? The scientific evidence does not show a danger to users ofwireless phones, including children and teenagers. If youwant to take steps to lower exposure to radio frequencyenergy (RF), the measures described above would applyto children and teenagers using wireless phones.Reducing the time of wireless phone use and increasingthe distance between the user and the RF source willreduce RF exposure. Some groups sponsored by other national governmentshave advised that children be discouraged from usingwireless phones at all. For example, the government in theUnited Kingdom distributed leaflets containing such arecommendation in December 2000. They noted that noevidence exists that using a wireless phone causes braintumors or other ill effects. Their recommendation to limitwireless phone use by children was strictlyprecautionary; it was not based on scientific evidence thatany health hazard exists.t519.book Page 177 Wednesday, November 1, 2006 4:41 PM
