4 About your digital radioA b o u t y o u r ra d i oAbout your digital radioYou may notice some differences in the way digital andanalog radios perform: the lack of static in low signalareas and consequently where you notice that coverageis poor.Lack of static noiseYou may notice the lack of static noise on digitalchannels. This lack of static is because your digital radioremoves the “noise” from the transmission so that youhear only clear voice.CoverageWith analog radios, a transmission gets progressivelyworse when you are in fringe areas or even slightlyoutside normal coverage areas. In these circumstances, you are probably able to still understand thetransmission despite the amount of static because thehuman brain can interpret speech even when it is notperfectly clear. With digital radios, the signal remains clear and thendrops off quite quickly at the border of a transmissionarea. The reason for this is that a digital transmission iseither received or it isn't.Because of this difference you may notice that digitalradios have different coverage patterns to analogradios. However, the actual coverage area between ananalog and a digital voice system is very similar.
