TASCAM DV-RA1000 Owner’s Manual 315 – DVD playback & recordingWhen performing high-resolution recording usingDVD media with the DV-RA1000, it is important toremember that you are not recording a standard audiodisc. The recording process creates an archive of audiofiles which can be edited and played back using aDV-RA1000. They can be subsequently retrieved ortransferred to another unit such as a digital audioworkstation for later processing and pre-mastering.NOTEThe DV-RA1000 uses DVD+RW media for high-resolu-tion recording. You cannot use DVD-R, DVD-RW orDVD-RAM media with the DV-RA1000.Organization of projects and filesOn the DV-RA1000, a project consists of up to 99audio files—the same number as the maximum num-ber of tracks on a Red Book CD-DA.In a project, all the files must be the same samplingfrequency (or all in DSD format). This is determinedwhen the project is set up.You can have different projects on the same disc (upto 99 of them, in fact), and different projects can havedifferent sampling frequencies and word lengths. As well as the audio files, a project also contains thefollowing information:• The setup for the effects• Mark data• Text associated with the project other than the filenames• A playlist showing the running order• User settings for the DV-RA1000Important note on the file systemIn order for the DV-RA1000 to read the informationon a disc, control information referred as UDFMI(UDF Management Information) must be written tothe disc.Although the DV-RA1000 writes this control infor-mation at key events, such as when the disc isejected, or the unit is shut down (see “Shut down” onpage 32), unexpected power loss may cause a disc toappear unreadable. To write the UDFMI manually:1 From the stopped state, press MENU and usethe wheel and ENTER to select the DVD menu. From there, select the DISC sub-menu.2 Highlight the SAVE UDFMI item and pressENTER.3 A popup asks you if you are sure. PressENTER to continue, and a progress bar showsthe progress of the operation.Press CANCEL to cancel the operation.TIPThis SAVE UDFMI function is also installed by default asa short cut using function key F5 (see “Short cuts” onpage 18).CAUTIONThere is a limit to the number of times that DVD+RWmedia used by the DV-RA1000 can be written. This alsoapplies to the UDFMI. It is impossible to provide definiteguidelines on the number of times this is possible, butthe type of media, environmental factors, etc. introducean element of unpredictability. We therefore recom-mend that wherever possible, you use new media forimportant recording projects, to prevent the possibilityof data loss caused by media errors.
