30Tone controlThe receiver is equipped with a volume-dependent tonecontrol (LOUDNESS). It is designed to compensate forthe ear's varying sensitivity to frequency relative tovolume. This is due to physiological characteristics of thehuman ear.At very high volume the loudness circuit has no effect atall. As volume is reduced its effect increases. The loudness circuit is switched on or off by pressing the button. The red LED above the button glows when LOUDN isswitched on.The FLAT function by-passes the receiver's tone controlsection, and thus switches the tone controls out ofcircuit. The frequency response is then absolutely linear(flat). The FLAT mode is switched on by pressing the FLATbutton. The red LED above the button glows when the FLATmode is switched on.Note:When the receiver is switched to FLAT mode it is notpossible to alter the sound with the /-controls.The LOUDNESS function is also available in FLATmode. / (Tone control)To compensate for the effects on reproduction quality ofimperfections in the auditioning room or unfavourableloudspeaker locations, the receiver is fitted with anactive, infinitely variable tone control system. The tone controls are designed to affect low frequenciesbelow 300 Hz (BASS) and high frequencies above4000 Hz (TREBLE) only, so that there is no danger ofcolouring the sound in the essential mid-range region. When the tone controls are in the central position thefrequency response is linear. If the controls are rotated clockwise then the bass ortreble is raised.Turn them counter-clockwise and the bass or treble fallsoff.Volume control and balance (Balance control)The control is used to set the balance betweenthe left-hand and right-hand channels, e. g. if the speak-ers are not set up symmetrically. To avoid any danger that the balance control might affectsound quality the balance range is limited to+0.6 dB / -8 dB.When the knob is at centre the gain of both channels isequal. If the knob is rotated clockwise then the stereo centreshifts to the right.Turn the knob counter-clockwise and the stereo centreshifts to the left. (Volume level control)Volume level control by means of a high-quality qua-druple potentiometer with extremely low balance error.Rotate the knob clockwise to increase volume.Turning the knob counter-clockwise reduces the volume.Recessable control knobs / / Normally the tone and balance control knobs arerecessed into the front panel. If you press any of theknobs lightly it will project out of the front panel, and youcan then rotate it. Each rotary control has a clear centredetent where the index mark points upwards. After making any adjustments push the knob lightly backinto the front panel, where it will engage automatically.
