Installation, Operation and Maintenance ManualVariCool® VAV6Subject to change without notice 1020-IM (0818)General InformationVariCool units are cooling and optional heating systemsdesigned to effectively and efficiently maintain tenantoccupied spaces within floor by floor building structures. Each VariCool unit delivers continuous air flow at variedair volumes and constant temperature to maintain tenantoccupied space settings through field supplied VAV terminaloutlet boxes Each unit is designed for optimal energyefficiency, reliability, IAQ, and lowered sound levels. Eachoccupant then controls their specific zone by adjustingtemperature setting allowing the VAV terminal outlet box toopen to provide conditioned air As the VAV box opens, theVariCool automatically adjusts to maintain the systems staticpressure set pointMultiple VariCool Systems may be networked together forunit lead lag, back up/assist, and system rotation Optionsare available for linking each system through a facilitiesBuilding Management System (BMS)Each unit is shipped in two/three pieces (depends on modelsize) for ease on movement to the location of installationEQUIPMENT INSPECTIONUpon receiving the unit, carefully inspect all sections for visibleor concealed interior/exterior damage If damage occurredduring transit, contact the freight carrier immediately and filea damage claim report Inspect the unit data plate to verifythat the model unit that was ordered is the correct unit beingreceived All accessory components for the application thatmust be field installed are shipped loose in one or severalboxes in the compressor sectionHANDLINGUse extreme caution so that damage does not occur whenmoving each section to the location of installation The unitmay be moved to the location of installation by crane, fork lift, hand truck, or roller bars Units are provided with lifting ringsfor rigging and movement by crane Spreader bars must beused to protect section cabinet structure during movementProtection must be used so that damage to the cabinetdoes not occur when using cables or slings Be certain eachsection is well supported when moving When using dollies, fork lifts, hand trucks, or roller bars, make sure the sectionsbase rails are well supported and the weight of the sectionsare distributed evenly so that dropping or damage does notoccur during movementLOCATION AND CLEARANCESThe unit should be installed in an equipment room locatedaway from occupied tenant spaces Careful considerationshould be taken during system layout and installation to allowfor minimum required service clearances for the VariCoolunit Minimum clearances provided are worst case scenarioIf the clearances were less around the cooling coil sectionand a cooling coil had to be replaced, it would be difficult tomaneuver the coil around the unit unless a service accessdoor(s) to the mechanical room were located next to theVariCool’s cooling coil end Figure 1 – Service Clearancesand Table 1 show minimum clearance requirements for eachmodel unit If the unit has an optional water side economizercoil, the distance for service clearance must be maintainedfrom the edge of the filter rack which will mount onto theeconomizer section on larger units but DX cooling coilon smaller units as the economizer coil will be mountedinternally on smaller systems
