106 Driving and OperationDriving hintsThe first 600 miles (1000 km)Drive your vehicle at various speeds. Donot use full throttle. Never allow the engineto labour at low revs.Make good use of all gears. Depress theaccelerator pedal a maximum ofapprox. 3 / 4 of the available pedal travel inall gears.Do not drive faster than three quarters ofmaximum speed.Do not brake unnecessarily hard for thefirst 125 miles (200 km).During the first drive, smoke may developbecause of wax and oil evaporating off theexhaust system. Park the vehicle in theopen for a while after the first drive andavoid inhaling the fumes.Fuel and engine oil consumption is higherthan normal during the running-in period.Never coast with engine not runningMany units will not function in this situation(e.g. brake servo unit, electric power-assisted steering). Driving in this manner isa danger to yourself and others.Brake servo unitWhen the engine is not running, the brakeservo unit is no longer effective once thebrake pedal has been depressed once ortwice. Braking effect is not reduced, butsignificantly greater force is required forbraking.Electric power-assisted steeringIf the electric power-assisted steering failswhen being towed with the engineswitched off, the vehicle can still besteered, but considerably more force isrequired.Driving in mountainous terrainThe cooling fan is electrically operated. Itscooling power is therefore independent ofthe engine speed.Since a considerable amount of heat isgenerated at high engine speeds and lessat slower speeds, do not shift down whenclimbing hills whilst the vehicle is still copingwith the gradient in the higher gear.Switching off the engineWhen you switch off, fans in the enginecompartment may continue running fora time to cool the engine. If the engine temperature is very high, e.g.after driving in mountainous terrain: Allowthe engine to idle for approx. 2 minutes, inorder to prevent heat accumulation.Vehicles with turbocharged engineAfter running at high engine speeds orhigh engine loads, operate the enginebriefly at a low load or run in neutral forapprox. 30 seconds before switching off,in order to protect the turbocharger.Save energy – more milesPlease observe the running-in hints onthe previous page and the tips for savingenergy on the following pages.Good, technically correct and economicaldriving ensures maximum durability andperformance for your vehicle.
