Maintenance Instructions LUBRICATION59Gear Axle Lubrication• The gear axle oil lubrication is SAE E.P. 80W-90(API GL-5) gear lube.• Check the axle oil level after every 100 hours ofoperation by removing the oil level plug. If additionaloil is needed, remove the breather vent on top of axleand fill until oil is at the level plug.• Change axle oil every 1000 hours or two (2)years.Hydrostatic Transmission FluidChecking Hydrostatic Transmission Fluid LevelThe hydrostatic transmissions are sealed unitsand do not need to be opened to check the fluidlevel. Hydrostatic fluid level should be checked ev-ery 25 hours of machine operation. It is preferableto check the fluid when the fluid is cold. Checkfluid levels as follows:IMPORTANT: Removing or breaking the seal onthe hydrostatic reservoir cap within the first1000 hours will VOID THE TRANSMISSION WAR-RANTY.1. Park the mower on a level surface. Stop theengine and wipe dirt and contaminants fromaround the base of the reservoir to better seethe COLD mark.2. The level of the oil can be seen through the sideof the opaque reservoir (DO NOT REMOVERESERVOIR CAP); using a light next to thereservoir will help make the level more visible.Cold LevelAir Bleed PlugReservoir CapTransmission Reservoir andAir Bleed Plug Location3. The reservoir has a fluid level COLD mark. Thereservoir oil level should ALWAYS be at orslightly above the COLD mark.4. If the fluid is below the COLD mark (or the trans-mission is not performing properly), contactyour local dealer. Attempting to add fluid orservice the transmission may VOID THETRANSMISSION WARRANTY.NOTE: Loosening the air bleed plug on top of thetransmission can be used to verify a low oil conditionin the transmission. As the plug is loosened (DONOT completely remove plug), oil will seep out if thetransmission is full of oil. If no oil appears, the trans-mission oil level is low and the transmission willneed to be serviced by an authorized Walker dealer. When a transmission is found to be low on oil, it ishighly probable that has been caused by an oil leakeither on the input drive shaft or the control armpivot. Dealer service is required to correct any oilleak along with refilling the transmission oil to theproper level.Grease Fitting and Oil Point LubricationLubricate the grease fittings and oil points after ev-ery 25 hours of operation. Lubricate more oftenwhen operating in dusty or dirty conditions. UseSAE general purpose lithium or molybdenum basegrease for grease fittings and light machine oil(SAE 10) to lubricate oil points. Lubricate thelocations shown in the Chassis and DeckLubrication Points illustration.NOTE: PTO universal joints (on the deck and trac-tor) require routine lubrication after every 25hours of running time. Remove tractor PTO quickdisconnect tube assembly for easy access togrease fittings.NOTE: The best way to lubricate the PTO tube halfof the universal joint assembly is to remove it fromthe tractor. See instructions for removing and install-ing PTO quick coupler, refer to Deck Installation inMower Deck Installation on Tractor in the Assembly Instructions.
