Made In Rome, NY, USAWatter$aver Heat Pump Water Heater 14! !HEATING ELEMENT REPLACEMENTWARNINGHeating element removal and replacement involves thedisconnection of electrical wiring. The following proce-dures must only be performed by a qualified servicetechnician.The Watter$aver Heat Pump Water Heater is factoryequipped with a 4500 watt heating element that requires a30 amp circuit breaker. For installations that don't have anexisting 30 amp circuit for the water heater, ECR Internationaloffers a 3500 watt element kit* that will allow the use of a20 amp circuit breaker. Voltage/wattage rating informationcan be found on the flange or terminal block of the elementor on the unit rating plate.* For more information on the 3500 watt heating element kit, contact thefactory at the phone number provided with this installation manual.1. Shut off electric power to the water heater.2. Drain the water heater as directed under “Drainingand Flushing.”3. Remove the access cover and fold the insulationoutward and away from the heater element(s). Removethe plastic thermostat cover from the thermostat,making sure to disengage the attachment point fromthe thermostat.4. Disconnect the electric wires from the heatingelement (Figure 8) and remove the screw-in elementsby turning the element counterclockwise with a 1½”socket wrench. Clean the area where the gasket fits to the tank. Ifyou are replacing the bottom element, remove theaccumulated sediment on the bottom of the tank.6. Make sure the replacement element has the correctvoltage and wattage rating. Position the new gasketon the element and insert it into the water heater tank(Figure 9). Tighten the element by turning it clockwiseuntil secure.7. Close the drain valve. Open all hot water faucets andallow the tank to fill completely with water. To purgethe lines of any excess air and sediment, keep the hotwater faucet open for 3 minutes after constant flow ofwater is obtained.8. Close the faucet and check all connections forleaks. Check for leaks around the element(s).9. Connect the electric wires to the heater element.Make sure the wires are secure and the attachmentpoints are engaged on the thermostat.10. Replace the plastic thermostat cover, insulation,and the access cover(s).11. Make certain the tank is filled with water. Applyingelectric current to heater elements not submerged inwater will destroy them.12. Restore the electric power supply to the waterheater.
