7-21Select a large, flat area off-road to becomefamiliar with your ATV. Make sure that this areais free of obstacles and other riders. You shouldpractice control of the throttle, brakes, shiftingprocedures, and turning techniques in this areabefore trying more difficult terrain. Always avoidriding on paved surfaces: the ATV is designedfor off-road use only, and handling maneuversare more difficult to perform on pavement.Set the parking brake and follow the instructionson page 6-1 to start the engine. Once it haswarmed up you are ready to begin riding yourATV. As you get on the ATV, be sure not toaccidentally move the shift pedal. Rememberthat the engine and exhaust pipe will be hotwhen riding and afterwards; do not allow skin orclothing to come in contact with these compo-nents.With the engine idling, pull the clutch lever todisengage the clutch and shift into 1st gear, andthen release the parking brake. Open the throttlegradually, and at the same time, release theclutch lever slowly. Once the ATV has attainedadequate speed, release the throttle lever and atsame time, quickly pull in the clutch lever andshift into 2nd gear. Open the throttle part wayand gradually release the clutch. Use this sameprocedure as you move into the higher gears.Be sure to coordinate the use of the throttle andshift pedal properly. If the throttle is applied tooabruptly or if the throttle is not released duringshifting, or if the shift pedal is not releasedbefore applying the throttle, the front wheelsmay lift off the ground resulting in a loss of direc-tional control. Avoid higher speeds until you arethoroughly familiar with the operation of yourATV.
