OPERATION AND IMPORTANT RIDING POINTS6-36NOTICEECA10261 Even with the transmission inthe neutral position, do notcoast for long periods of timewith the engine off, and do nottow the motorcycle for long dis-tances. The transmission isproperly lubricated only whenthe engine is running. Inade-quate lubrication may damagethe transmission. Always use the clutch whilechanging gears to avoid dam-aging the engine, transmission, and drive train, which are notdesigned to withstand theshock of forced shifting.EAU16682To start out and accelerate1. Pull the clutch lever to disengagethe clutch.2. Shift the transmission into firstgear. The neutral indicator lightshould go out.3. Open the throttle gradually, and atthe same time, release the clutchlever slowly.4. At the recommended shift pointsshown in the following table, closethe throttle, and at the same time, quickly pull the clutch lever in.5. Shift the transmission into secondgear. (Make sure not to shift thetransmission into the neutral posi-tion.)6. Open the throttle part way andgradually release the clutch lever.7. Follow the same procedure whenshifting to the next higher gear.TIPWhen shifting gears in normal operat-ing conditions, use the recommendedshift points.EAU58270To decelerate1. Release the throttle and applyboth the front and the rear brakessmoothly to slow the motorcycle.2. At the recommended shift pointsshown in the following table, shiftto a lower gear.3. When the motorcycle reaches 20km/h (12 mi/h), the engine is aboutto stall or runs roughly, pull theclutch lever in, use the brakes toslow the motorcycle, and continueto downshift as necessary.4. Once the motorcycle hasstopped, the transmission can beshifted into the neutral position. The neutral indicator light shouldcome on and then the clutch levercan be released.WARNINGEWA17380 Improper braking can causeloss of control or traction. Al-ways use both brakes and applythem smoothly. Make sure that the motorcycleand the engine have sufficientlyslowed before shifting to a low-er gear. Engaging a lower gearwhen the vehicle or enginespeed is too high could makethe rear wheel lose traction orthe engine to over-rev. Thiscould cause loss of control, anaccident and injury. It could alsocause engine or drive train dam-age.
