16AMMETER (If Equipped)The ammeter registers the rate of battery charge ordischarge. The ammeter will register on the dischargingside when starting the engine. It should register on theopposite side (charging) when the engine is running inthe fast position until the battery is completely charged.With a fully charged battery or with the engine idling,the ammeter will not show a charge. See Figure 18.Figure 18CLUTCH-BRAKE PEDALThe clutch-brake pedal is located on the left side of thetractor. See Figure 18. Depressing the clutch-brakepedal partway disengages the clutch. Pressing thepedal all the way down disengages the clutch andengages the disc brake.NOTE: The clutch-brake pedal must be depressed tostart the engine.SHIFT LEVERThe shift lever is located in the center of the consoleand has four positions, HIGH, LOW, NEUTRAL andREVERSE. See Figure 19. The clutch-brake pedalmust be depressed and the garden tractor must not bemoving when shifting gears. Do not force the shift lever.Release the clutch-brake pedal slightly to line up theshifting collar in the transmission. Then try to shiftgears.PARKING BRAKETo set the parking brake, depress the clutch-brakepedal and pull up the parking brake knob. It will stay inthe raised position. To release the parking brake,depress and release the clutch-brake pedal. See Figure19.NOTE: The parking brake must be set if the operatorleaves the seat with the engine running.Figure 19SPEED CONTROL LEVERThe speed control lever is located on the left fender. Itallows you to regulate the ground speed of the gardentractor. See Figure 20. To select the ground speed,depress clutch pedal. Push speed control lever outwardand move backward to slow garden tractor, moveforward to increase speed. When desired speed hasbeen obtained, release lever in that position.
