GENERAL OPERATION• Read, understand, and follow all instructionson the machine and in the manual(s) beforeattempting to assemble and operate. Keepthis manual in a safe place for future andregular reference and for ordering replace-ment parts.• Be familiar with all controls and their properoperation. Know how to stop the machineand disengage them quickly.• Never allow children under 14 years old tooperate this machine. Children 14 years oldand over should read and understand theoperation instructions and safety rules inthis manual and should be trained and su-pervised by a parent.• Never allow adults to operate this machinewithout proper instruction.• To help avoid blade contact or a thrown ob-ject in jury, keep bystanders, helpers,children and pets at least 75 feet from themachine while it is in operation. Stop ma-chine if anyone enters the area.• Thoroughly in spect the area where theequipment is to be used. Remove all stones,sticks, wire, bones, toys and other foreignobjects which could be trip ped over orpicked up and thrown by the blade. Thrownobjects can cause serious personal injury.• Plan your mow ing pat tern to avoid dis-charge of material toward roads, sidewalks,bystanders and the like. Also, avoid dis-charg ing ma terial agai nst a wall orobstruction which may cause dischargedmaterial to ricochet back toward the opera-tor.• Always wear safety glasses or safety gog-gles during operation and while performingan adjustment or repair to protect your eyes.Thrown objects which ricochet can causeserious injury to the eyes.• Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes andclose-fitting slacks and shirts. Shirts andpants that cover the arms and legs andsteel-toed shoes are recommended. Neveroperate this machine in bare feet, sandals,slippery or light weight (e.g. canvas) shoes.• Many injuries occur as a result of the mowerbeing pulled over the foot dur ing a fallcaused by slipping or tripping. Do not holdon to the mower if you are falling; releasethe handle immediately.• Never pull the mower back toward you whileyou are walking. If you must back themower away from a wall or obstruction firstlook down and behind to avoid tripping andthen follow these steps:a) Step back from the mower to fully extendyour arms.b) Be sure you are well balanced with surefooting.c) Pull the mower back slowly, no more thanhalf way toward you.d) Repeat these steps as needed.• Do not operate the mower while under theinfluence of alcohol or drugs.• Do not put hands or feet near rotating partsor under the cutting deck. Contact with theblade can amputate hands and feet.• A missing or damaged discharge cover cancause blade contact or thrown object inju-ries.• Do not engage the self-propelled mecha-nism on units so equipped while startingengine.• Never attempt to make a wheel or cuttingheight adjustment while the engine is run-ning.• The blade control handle is a safety device.Never at tempt to bypass its op eration.Doing so makes the safety device inopera-3This unit has been inspected against the manufacturers quality check list.
