15MAINTENANCE1. Engine oil level: Check daily with engine coldand on a flat surface. Remove the dipstick andwipe clean. Reinsert the dipstick all the way,but do not screw down. Remove the dipstickand check oil level. If oil level is low add oil. Useengine manufacturers specs for type of oil.2. Mower blades: Stop engine and remove key.Inspect blades and sharpen or replace asneeded. Check daily or more often if needed. The machine requires more power with dullblades and gives a poor cut. If blades get bent, replace them. Blades shouldn’t have anynotches from hitting objects. The air foil on topof the blade should be sufficient to raise thegrass for cutting. If blades are in good condi-tion, sharpen at an angle of 22 to 28 degreesabout 2-1/2 inches in from the tips.Blade RemovalNOTE: Protect your hands with gloves and/or wrapblade with heavy cloth.• Remove blade bolt by turningcounterclockwise.• Install new or re-sharpened blade.• Install and tighten blade bolt securely (90ft./lbs. torque).Care should be taken to keep the blade bal-anced. An unbalanced blade will cause exces-sive vibration and eventual damage to mowerand engine.WARNINGWhen it is necessary to raise themower for any repair or service, usejackstands to provide adequate sup-port. DO NOT rely on hydraulic or me-chanical jacks• The blade can be sharpened with a file oron a grinding wheel. Do not attempt tosharpen while on the mower.• To check blade balance, you will need a 5/8" diameter steel bolt, pin, or a conebalancer. (When using a cone balancer, follow the instructions supplied withbalancer.)NOTE: Do not use a nail for balancing the blade.• Slide blade on to an un-threaded portion ofthe steel bolt or pin and hold the bolt or pinparallel with the ground. If the blade isbalanced, it should remain in a horizontalposition. If either end of the blade movesdownward, sharpen the heavy end until theblade is balanced.CENTER HOLE5/8" BOLTOR PINBLADETo Sharpen BladeFIGURE 133. Safety interlock system: Check daily and neveroperate the mower if this system is not func-tioning properly.4. Hardware: Stop engine and remove key thor-oughly inspect the entire machine for any miss-ing or loose hardware. Check daily.5. Air cleaner: Stop engine and remove key. Re-move plastic cover and loosen wingnut on theair cleaner. Remove the foam pre-cleaner andwash or replace if needed. Inspect paper filterand replace if dirty. Check every 25 hours, dailyif in very dirty conditions. Fuel efficiency, en-gine RPM, and available power goes down rap-idly if the air filter is dirty. Prolonged effectscould damage the engine.
