HOW YOUR GASFURNACE WORKSYour furnace is a very easy appliance totake for granted. Season after season, itsits there in your home, keeping youwarm and comfortable. For this reason,you may never have given much thoughtto the way your furnace operates. Inorder to get the safest and most efficientoperation from your furnace, though,you should understand how your fur-nace does its job.When you set your thermostat to providemore heat in your home, you are startingthe heating cycle of the furnace. First,the inducer motor starts to purge theheat exchanger of any remaining gas-ses. Next, the hot surface ignitor glowsand after a warm-up period the gas valveopens and ignition occurs. A short timelater the blower starts and distributes thewarm air throughout the home. Whenthe temperature set on your thermostatis reached, the gas valve closes, themain burners are turned off, and theblower continues to run until the remain-ing warm air in the system is distributed.When the blower stops, the heating cy-cle has ended.KEEP THE FURNACEAREA CLEARNEVER . . . use the area around yourfurnace as a storage area for itemswhich could block the normal flow of air.This flow of air is required for ventilationof the various furnace components.WARNING: Do not block or ob-struct air openings:1. On the furnace.2. Air openings communicatingwith the air in which thefurnace is installed.3. The spacings around thefurnace.NEVER . . store flammable materials ofany kind near your furnace. Gasoline, sol-vents, and other volatile liquids should bestored only in approved containers outsideyour home. These materials vaporize eas-ily and are extremely dangerous.NEVER . . . store cleaning materialsnear your furnace. Materials such asbleaches, detergents, powdered cleans-ers, etc., can cause corrosion of the heatexchangers.WARNING: Insulating materialsmay be flammable.CAUTION: When a furnace isinstalled in an attic or other insu-lated space, or if insulation isadded, examine the furnace areato ensure that the furnace is keptclear and free of insulation.START-UP ANDSHUTDOWN -GENERALINSTRUCTIONSRead and follow these proceduresCAREFULLY and COMPLETELY.Before attempting to start your furnace,always do the following things FIRST:• Turn the thermostat OFF.• Open windows or make other provi-sions to ventilate the area around thefurnace.• If the blower is running, wait until itshuts off automatically.• Turn off all electrical power to thefurnace.• Make sure all metal surfaces of thefurnace have cooled to room tem-perature before beginning.FOR YOUR SAFETY,READ BEFOREOPERATING:A. This appliance does not have a pilot.It is equipped with an ignition devicewhich automatically lights the burn-ers. Do not try to light the burners byhand.B. BEFORE OPERATING, smell allaround the appliance area for gas.Be sure to smell next to the floorbecause some gas is heavier thanair and will settle on the floor.WHAT TO DOIF YOU SMELL GAS:• Do not try to light any appliance.• Do not touch any electrical switch; donot use any phone in your building.• Extinguish any open flame• Immediately call your gas supplierfrom a neighbor’s phone. Follow thegas supplier’s instructions.• If you cannot reach your gas supplier,call the fire department.C. Use only your hand to turn the gascontrol knob. Never use tools. If theknob will not turn by hand, don’t tryto repair it. Call a qualified servicetechnician. Force or attempted re-pair may result in a fire or explosion.WARNING: Do not use this fur-nace if any part has been underwater. Immediately call a quali-fied service technician to inspectthe furnace and to replace anypart of the control system andany gas control which has beenunderwater.LIGHTINGINSTRUCTIONS1. STOP! Read all preceding safety in-formation.2. Set the thermostat to lowest setting.3. Turn off all electrical power to theappliance.4. This furnace is equipped with an ig-nition device which automaticallylights the burners. Do not try to lightthe burners by hand.5. Remove the control access panel.6. Turn gas control switch to "OFF".7. Wait five (5) minutes to clear out anygas. If you then smell gas, STOP!Follow step B in the preceding safetyinformation. If you don’t smell gas,go to the next step.8. Turn gas control switch to "ON". Donot force.9. Replace control access panel.10. Turn on all electrical power to theappliance.11. Set thermostat to the desired setting.12. The unit will go through a 17-secondigniter warm-up period.
