1 I NTRODUCING THE BASELINE SWITCHThis chapter provides an overview of the features andcapabilities of the 3Com Baseline Switch 2848-SFP Plus.It also identifies the contents of the Switch package andhelps you get to know the physical features of thedevice.Overview of the Baseline SwitchThe 3Com® Baseline Switch 2848-SFP Plus is a versatile,easy-to-use configurable Switch. It is ideal for users whowant the high-speed performance of 10/100/1000switching with the added functionality of Gigabit fiberlinks, but do not need sophisticated managementcapabilities. The Switch is shipped ready for use. Noconfiguration is necessary.Features and CapabilitiesThe Switch has 44 shielded RJ-45, 10/100/1000 Mbpsauto-negotiating ports and 4 Gigabit combo ports(which comprised of a RJ-45 port and a Small FormFactor Pluggable (SFP) transceiver slot) on the frontpanel for easy, flexible connection to fiber-based Gigabitmedia.Autosensing of MDI/MDIX ConnectionsAll ports on the Switch can autosense both mediumdependent interface (MDI) and medium dependentinterface crossover (MDIX) connections. This allows youto connect network devices to each port using either anormal straight-through TP (twisted pair) cable or a‘crossover’ TP cable.Any port can therefore be used to connect to anotherswitch port, server, or workstation without additionalconfiguration.Autonegotiating 10/100/1000 Mbps PortsEach 10/100/1000 Mbps port automatically determinesthe speed and duplex mode of the connectedequipment and provides a suitable switched connection.10/100 Mbps connections on these 1000BASE-T portscan operate in either half-duplex or full-duplex mode.1000 Mbps connections, on the other hand, onlyoperate in full duplex mode.
