To do this:a Access the command line interface of the Switch through the consoleport. See “Setting Up Through the Console Port” on page 28.b Use the protocol ip basicConfig command to enter suitableIP information for the Switch.For more information about IP, see “Managing a Switch Over theNetwork” on page 30.2 If you are using a terminal emulator, check that you have an IP stackcorrectly installed on the terminal emulator.3 Check that your terminal or terminal emulator is connected to the Switchusing a port that is in VLAN 1. By default, all ports on the Switch are inVLAN 1.4 Open a Telnet session by specifying the IP address of the Switch. If you areunsure how to do this, check the documentation supplied with the Telnetfacility.Setting Up SNMPManagementAny network management application running the Simple NetworkManagement Protocol (SNMP) can manage a Switch if: The correct Management Information Bases (MIBs) are installed on themanagement workstation, see Appendix C “Technical Specifications”. The management workstation is connected to the Switch using a portin VLAN 1 (the Default VLAN). By default, all ports on the Switch are inVLAN 1.For information about using an SNMP network management applicationto manage a Switch, see the documentation supplied with the software.To manage your Switch using an SNMP network managementapplication, you need to specify SNMP community strings for the usersdefined on the Switch.
