Chapter 1. Understanding IDSL and the Express L128FP1-4 Express L128FP User Manual 61202070L4-201. LAN Bridge: Bridging provides a point-to-point connectionbetween two LANs. The bridge learning function scans thesource and destination media access control (MAC) addresses ofall packets on its local LAN and determines which packetsshould be transmitted over the IDSL link. Applications includeconnectivity between single user or small offices to corporateLANs.2. IP Router: The Express L128FP can function as an IP router usingthe Routing Information Protocol (RIP) for advertising and learn-ing routes among other routers. Static routes may also be enteredinto the routing table.3. IPX Router: IPX routers and services can be exchanged betweenthe Express L128FP and other devices using RIP and ServiceAdvertising Protocol (SAP). Watch dog serialization filtering andspoofing can permit the ISDN to be idle during no applicationtraffic periods.4. Network Address Translation (NAT): Single networks can con-nect to the Internet with this function. The Express L128FPtranslates outgoing IP packets over the IDSL to the IP router atthe Internet Service Provider. Many popular Internet applica-tions are supported.5. PPP or Frame Relay: The layer two protocol used to transferpackets can be PPP or Frame Relay (RFC 1490). PPP allows apoint-to-point connection, whereas Frame Relay can provide upto ten permanent virtual circuits.Routing and Bridging with the Express L128FPThe Express L128FP is a Router and Transparent Learning Bridge. Itsfeatures can be easily configured and used once several basic conceptsare understood.Factory DefaultThe Express L128FP comes from the factory configured for MACBridging with no filters or connection information defined. An IP ad-dress of 10.0.0.1 with a network mask of 255.255.255.0 is preloaded. The factory default layer two configuration is Auto Detect, which au-tomatically detects PPP or Frame Relay.
