However, existingcopper access networks do not facilitate anend-to-end high-bandwidth connection, creating a bottleneck. This bottleneck is thefirst mile of access. This refers to the accesslink (most often a TDM-based copper circuit)from the business customer’s office LAN totheir service provider’s MAN. ADTRAN ®affords service providers the ability to removethis bottleneck through the utilization of animproved data transmission standard. Thisstandard, ITU-T G.998.2, is known as Ethernetin the First Mile (EFM). ADTRAN EFM overCopper (EoCu) defines a way to effectivelyand universally bond together, lower bandwidthcopper loops or pairs of wires creating a CarrierEthernet access connection. This innovative EoCu solution enables serviceproviders to extend packet-based business-classservices beyond the reach of their fiber networkby leveraging the existing investment of copper-based TDM business services assets. This meansleveraging the full advantages of TDM, themost understood, successful, and ubiquitousbusiness service infrastructure. Due to budgetrestrictions and time to market requirements, deploying fiber to address uneven or disperseservice demand is not feasible, leaving a largepercentage of businesses to rely on copperbusiness access. The ADTRAN EoCu solution is comprisedof the NetVanta ® 800 family of NTU and canbe launched from our Total Access ® 3000 andTotal Access 5000 platforms. The NetVanta 830Series NTU delivers enhanced data rate capa-bilities to deliver up to 45 Mbps of Ethernetservice over bonded e.SHDSL. The NetVanta810 Series NTU leverages the existing copper-based TDM business services assets to rapidlyextend Ethernet service to any customerwho currently uses DS1 or E1 service. TheNetVanta 873 can EFM bond up to threeDS3 connections to deliver up to 134 Mbpsof Carrier Ethernet service.Quality of Service Flexibility and AssuranceThe NetVanta 800 Series deliver packet flowcapabilities certified compliant per the MetroEthernet Forum. These packet flow capabilitiesoffer the traffic classification and bandwidthprofiling capabilities required to offer customersa flexible, tiered service offer. In addition to thishighly configurable, granular bandwidth selec-tion toolset enabling Quality of Service (QoS)options, these same network termination pointssupport the standards-based measurement andmonitoring capabilities required to maintain acarrier-grade Ethernet network. All of this allowsproviders to create and meet customerSLA agreements.Reliable Service Connection MechanismsIn the event a single loop fails, the NetVanta800 offers resiliency, maintaining traffic overthe remaining active loops in order to main-tain service. Once the failed loop is operationalagain, the NetVanta will automatically detect itsavailability and return the loop to the bondedgroup, providing the original provisionedcustomer bandwidth. When deployed throughthe Total Access 5000, these NTUs tap into anunparalleled array of copper loop diagnostictools that afford an even greater serviceassurance level.Simplified Service DeliveryIn order to improve service time to marketand reduce deployment costs, the NetVanta800 Series delivers a feature set designed tosimplify service deployment and maintenance.ADTRAN Total Access EMS employs EZ-EthernetProvisioning, minimizing the number of stepsto provision a new service. The EIA-232 craftport enables local access for configuration andstatus information. A management VLAN isused to remotely configure and collect statusinformation. The compact chassis and flexibledeployment options offer wallmount orrackmount for superior flexibility. Whenwallmounted, any NetVanta 800 onlyoccupies a 17-inch by 10-inch area of thecustomer’s telephone wiring closet. Forrackmount installations, custom 19-inchrackmount shelves are available. |
