Network Topologies3-3Infrastructure Wireless LANThe access point also provides access to a wired LAN forwireless workstations. An integrated wired/wireless LAN is calledan Infrastructure configuration. A Basic Service Set (BSS)consists of a group of wireless PC users, and an access pointthat is directly connected to the wired LAN. Each wireless PC inthis BSS can talk to any computer in its wireless group via a radiolink, or access other computers or network resources in the wiredLAN infrastructure via the access point. The infrastructure configuration not only extends the accessibilityof wireless PCs to the wired LAN, but also increases the effectivewireless transmission range for wireless PCs by passing theirsignal through one or more access points.A wireless infrastructure can be used for access to a centraldatabase, or for connection between mobile workers, as shown inthe following figure.FileServerSwitchDesktop PCAccess PointWired LAN Extensionto Wireless AdaptersPC with WirelessPCI AdapterNotebook with WirelessPC Card Adapter
