Operating on Battery PowerOperating on Battery Power2-112.22.2 Power ManagementPower ManagementThis computer has a built-in power managementunit that monitors system activity. System activityrefers to any activity involving one or more of thefollowing devices: keyboard, mouse, floppy drive, hard disk, peripherals connected to the serial andparallel ports, and video memory. If no activity isdetected for a period of time (called an inactivitytime-out), the computer stops some or all of thesedevices in order to conserve energy. This computer employs an innovative powermanagement technique called Heuristic PowerManagement or HPM. HPM allows the computerto provide maximum power conservation andmaximum performance at the same time.Power management methods used by mostcomputers are timer-based. You set inactivitytime-out values for the display, hard disk, andother devices. The computer then “sleeps” whenthese time-outs elapse. The problem with this isthat no two users are alike. Each of us has his orher own habits when using the computer, whichmakes timer-based power management ineffective. With HPM, your computer manages its poweraccording to the way you use your computer. Thismeans the computer delivers maximum powerwhen you need it, and saves power when you don’tneed the maximum — all without yourintervention. There are no timers to set, becausethe HPM system figures out everything for you.
