2-18AAA-130U2 Series Installation and Hardware GuideExternal SCSI Array Enclosures (Storage Subsystems)To help you conveniently manage your SCSI storage subsystems, avariety of external array enclosures are available from differentmanufacturers. Figure 2-16 shows a typical setup between the arrayenclosure and the system. To install your SCSI devices in theseenclosures, refer to the enclosure’s documentation. The followinginformation is provided to help you properly connect yourenclosure to the system: (See the Adaptec Web site athttp://www.adaptec.com/raid for a list of popular array storageenclosures and disk drive manufacturers.)n All rules for SCSI ID and termination must be followed wheninstalling SCSI device in an array enclosure.n Ideally, the array enclosure itself should provide terminationcapability, either on the SCSI backplane or with an attachableactive terminator, as shown in Figure 2-16, and you should dis-able termination on all the drives in the enclosure. If you termi-nate the SCSI bus by enabling termination on a drive, you mayrun into problems if you have to replace that drive and youthen forget to terminate the replacement drive.n If the enclosure you are using for the array drives is not specif-ically designed as a array enclosure (such as a standard towerunit), be sure it has adequate cooling and ventilation.Figure 2-16.
