A-2Adaptec Storage Management Software User’s GuideSNMPSNMP is widely used and supported on a variety of servers, workstations, bridges, routers, and hubs. SNMP support alsoincludes other computer system resources, such as Fibre Channeland RAID controllers.SNMP implementations vary from simple device informationdisplay and collection of statistics, to complex configurationmanagement systems. SNMP is implemented by creating an MIBthat describes the objects to be managed. SNMP establishesstandards to access and manage various types of data regardingattached resources within a computer network.Management Information BaseAs with any network management system, the core component ofSNMP is the database containing the information about the objectsto be managed. For SNMP this is referred to as the ManagementInformation Base (MIB). A MIB is written using the ASN.1(Abstract Syntax Notation One) format as described in ISO 8825-2.This format allows the exchange of structured data, especiallybetween application programs over networks, by describing datastructures in a form that is independent of machine architectureand application software.Every system resource to be managed is represented as an objectand the MIB is a collection of these objects. In a networkenvironment each system (workstation or server) maintains a copyof the MIB containing the current status of the objects which itdefines. The MIB information is maintained by a software agent. Atthe operating system level, a master agent controls the system MIB.Adaptec supplies a subagent that contributes its own MIB to thesystem MIB. This subagent also responds to requests from themaster agent for information as needed.Note: For additional security, all of the Adaptec MIB data isread-only. The Adaptec SNMP feature is intended only forgathering inventory information and for processing statusand alert information.
