Customizing The AXIS 250S AXIS 250S User’s Manual42Appendix D - Customizing The AXIS 250SModifying the File SystemThe Linux-based operating system and flash memory file system make it possible foradvanced users and application developers to customize the AXIS 250S by addingadditional files to the read-write area of the flash memory.Important!Although modification of the file system is not supported, the Axis web at www.axis.comdoes maintain various documents designed to assist third-party development. These includedetailed information such as:• The Axis Camera API, HTTP-Interface Specification• Descriptions of useful scripting technologiesConfiguration via FTPAs an alternative to configuring the AXIS 250S using a browser, the configurationparameters of your unit can be modified using the File Transfer Protocol (FTP).FTP is supported by most operating environments and is a useful method for quicklydownloading standard pre-configurations to one or more servers.• Modification of the flash file system is NOT supported by Axis. In practice, this means that Axis willnot answer questions relating to custom script or Web page development, but merely wishes toinform potential application developers of the possibilities afforded by the Linux-based file structureof the AXIS 250S.• When attempting to modify the product, you may inadvertently create a problem that will requireyou to return the AXIS 250S to its factory default settings. At worst, you may even cause permanentdamage to the unit that renders it unusable. Consequently, Axis strongly recommends that inexperi-enced users DO NOT modify the file system.
