GETTING READY———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————28Needle types and their usesThe sewing machine needle that should be used depends on the fabric and thread thickness. Refer to thefollowing table when choosing the thread and needle appropriate for the fabric that you wish to sew.Note● Never use thread weight of 20 or lower. Itmay cause malfunctions.Memo● The lower the thread number, the thickerthe thread, and the higher the needlenumber, the thicker the needle.● Use the ball point needle when sewing onstretch fabrics or fabrics where skippedstitches easily occur.● Use a 90/14 to 100/16 needle withtransparent nylon threads, regardless of thefabric being sewn.Fabric Type/ApplicationThreadSize of NeedleType SizeMedium weightfabricsBroadcloth Cotton thread60–9075/11–90/14Taffeta Synthetic threadFlannel, Gabardine Silk thread 50Thin fabricsLawn Cotton thread60–9065/9–75/11Georgette Synthetic threadChallis, Satin Silk thread 50Thick fabricsDenim Cotton thread30 100/165090/14–100/16Corduroy Synthetic thread50-60Tweed Silk threadStretchfabricsJerseyThread for knits 50–60Ball point needle75/11–90/14(golden colored)TricotEasily frayed fabricsCotton thread50–9065/9–90/14Synthetic threadSilk thread 50For top-stitching Synthetic threadSilk thread30 100/1650–60 90/11–90/14CAUTION● The appropriate fabric, thread and needlecombinations are shown in the table above.
