10 Product Overview ELH100-12/24TXBootPThe Bootstrap Protocol (BootP) provides for the capability of passingconfiguration information to hosts on a TCP/IP network. Using thisprocess, network devices do not need to be configured before they cancommunicate using the TCP/IP protocol suite. The ELH100-12/24TXuses BootP to automatically configure IP address information withoutrequiring access to the console menus. BootP operation is configurableusing the System Configuration Menu of the console menus, the on-boardWeb agent, or via SNMP.LEDsThe port LEDs on the hub unit provide a quick and accurate display of theintegrity of hub connections, indicating link and partition for each of theports. The port LEDs on the optional switch/media modules indicate Link,Activity, Collision, Full/Half duplex mode, and speed (100M) for each ofthe ports.Full Duplex ModeFull duplex mode is supported on the optional switch/media modules. Thismode of operation can double the throughput of port connections, bydisabling the collision detection portion of the Ethernet Carrier SenseMultiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) protocol, allowing fortwo-way traffic. Full duplex is configurable using the Duplex parameter inthe Switch/Media Menu of the console menus or via SNMP.Application ExampleThe exploding popularity of the Internet and of corporate intranets, as wellas new, high-bandwidth desktop applications, are driving the demand forFast Ethernet. The need to gradually phase in Fast Ethernet networks, without abandoning existing 10 Mbps network segments, is driving theneed for economical dual-speed network solutions. The ELH100-12/24TX hubs are ideal for gradually building up the networkinfrastructure needed to meet the demands of today’s data intensiveapplications, while retaining the use of legacy network equipment. Thehubs’ low cost, high port count, and stacking capability make themattractive and affordable for dedicated 10/100 Mbps connections to thedesktop. In addition, extensive features, including redundant links, portsecurity, and micro-segmentation of bus connections, provide themanagement needed for the workgroup and local backbone. The 100M LED appears only on the 10Base-T/100Base-TX module.
