2-1SECTION 2. UT30 TOWER INSTALLATION2.1 UT30 TOWER INSTALLATIONThe UT30 10 meter tower provides a supportstructure for mounting the weather stationcomponents. Figure 2.1-1 shows a typicalUT30 equipped with instrumentation enclosure, meteorological sensors, and solar panel.2.1.1 TOWER INSTALLATION SAFETYCONCERNSWARNING: Tower installation near powerlines is dangerous. The minimum saferecommended distance from overheadpower lines is 2 times the height of thetower and mast combined. When installing the tower, remember:• DO NOT use a metal ladder• DO NOT work on a wet or windy day• DO dress properly−shoes with rubber solesand heels, rubber gloves, and long sleeves.2.1.2 BASE AND GUY ANCHOR LAYOUT1. A guyed UT30 tower requires an areaapproximately 17 feet in diameter. Brush andtall weeds should be removed, otherwise thenatural vegetation and ground surface shouldbe disturbed as little as possible.2. Drive a stake where the base of the towerwill be located. Attach a line to the stakeand scribe a circle with a 17 foot radius.Drive a stake on the scribed line oppositethe direction the tower will hinge for the firstguy anchor location (Figure 2.1-2).On level ground, lay out the remaining twoanchor locations by measuring 29.5 feetfrom the first anchor to the scribed line oneither side of the base stake (Figure 2.1-2).On unlevel ground, use a compass at thebase stake to lay out the remaining twoanchor locations 120 degrees from the first.Vary the distance between the tower andeach anchor so that the angle between thetower and the guy wire will be approximately30 degrees.2.1.3 TOWER BASE INSTALLATIONThere are two base options: the B18 base ispoured in concrete; the RFM18 roof mount baseis anchored to a flat surface.2.1.3.1 B18 Base installation1. Dig a hole 36" square and 48" deep wherethe tower base will be located (Figure 2.1-3).2. Optionalconstruct a concrete form out of2" x 4" lumber 36" square (insidedimensions). Center the form over the holeand drive two stakes along the outside edgeof each side. Level the form by driving nailsthrough the stakes and into the form whileholding the form level.3. Attach the bottom section of the tower tothe B18 base using one bolt per leg, makingsure that the hinge direction is common forall legs.4. Center the bottom tower section with thebase attached in the hole. Orient thetower/base for the proper hinge direction.Make sure that the top of the legs will be atleast 1/2" above the finished height of theconcrete (Figure 2.1-4).5. Fill the hole with concrete. Getting thebottom tower section plumb is veryimportant. As concrete is poured into thehole, periodically check the tower for plumbusing a carpenter's level and makeadjustments as necessary. Allow three tofour days for the concrete to cure.REGCOMENDEDFeed SENSORSPortland Or USASerial 27115REGCOMENDEDFeed SENSORSPortland Or USASerial 27115REGCOMENDEDFeed SENSORSPortland Or USASerial 27115 27115FIGURE 2.1-1.
