85Shooting – Selecting Particular EffectsSetting the ApertureWhen you set the aperture in the aperture-priority AE mode, thecamera automatically selects a shutter speed to match thebrightness.Selecting a lower aperture value (opening the aperture) allows youto blur the background and create a beautiful portrait. A higheraperture value (closing it) brings the entire range from foreground tobackground into focus. The larger the aperture value, the greater therange of the image brought into clear focus.1 Turn the mode dial to Av.z The aperture value will show on the displaypanel. It will also be displayed on the LCDMonitor if the monitor is on.2 Turn the main dial and select anaperture value.3 Shoot the image.z The correct exposure has been set if theshutter speed and aperture value show inwhite on the LCD monitor.z If the shutter speed is shown in red on theLCD monitor, the image is underexposed(insufficient light) or overexposed (toomuch light). Adjust the aperture valueusing the main dial until the shutter speeddisplay turns to white.If you set [Safety Shift] to [On] in the Rec.menu, the aperture value will shift to thecorrect value automatically (Safety Shiftfunction (p. 86)).z You can change the automaticallyselected combinations of shutter speedsand aperture values without altering theexposure (p. 106).
