Setting the Receive Mode 5-7Receiving Faxes5Receiving Faxes Manually: Manual ModeIf you want to select , check the following:■ Select This Mode If:• you only have one telephone line for both fax and telephone use.• you receive mainly voice calls and sometimes faxes.■ You Will Need to:• set . (See “Setting the Receive Mode,” on p. 5-1.)• connect a telephone to the machine. (See “Connect the telephone cable and necessaryexternal device,” in the Set-Up Instructions (for MF5750 users) or Set-Up Instructions forthe Machine (for MF 5770 users).)• make sure the setting in the menu is enabled, if youwant to start receiving a document from the telephone. (See <6. REMOTE RX> of “MenuDescriptions,” p. 8-5.)■ When You Receive a Fax CallThe telephone will ring. Pick up the handset and if you hear a beep ➞ press [Start] on themachine to receive the fax, or enter the two-digit ID code from the telephone ➞ hang upthe handset.NOTEIf the offhook alarm starts beeping, make sure that the handset is resting properly on thehandset cradle. The offhook alarm can be turned off. (See <4. OFFHOOK ALARM> of“Menu Descriptions,” on p. 8-3.)■ When You Receive a Voice CallThe telephone will ring. Pick up the handset to answer the call. If the caller wants to senda document after talking to you, ask them to press the start key on their fax machine.When you hear a beep, press [Start] on the machine to receive the fax ➞ hang up thehandset.NOTEThe telephone rings for every call, whether it is a fax call or a voice call. If you want themachine to receive faxes automatically after ringing for a specified number of rings,enable the setting. You can also specify the number of ringsbefore the machine receives faxes.
