Running a largepump at variable speed over a wide range is not an idealsolution because of low pump efficiency at lower speed. Ina practical way, the limit is 25% of the rated full-loadspeed for the pump.In the BASIC cascade controller, the frequency convertercontrols a variable speed (lead) motor as the variablespeed pump and can stage up to 2 additional constantspeed pumps on and off. Connect the additional constantspeed pumps directly to mains or via soft starters. Byvarying the speed of the initial pump, variable speedcontrol of the entire system is provided. The variablespeed maintains constant pressure, which results inreduced system stress, and quieter operation in pumpingsystems.Constant SpeedPumps (2)Variable SpeedPumps (1)Motor starter Frequency ConverterwithCascade ControllerPressure Sensor130BA362.10Illustration 4.9 BASIC Cascade ControllerFixed lead pumpThe motors must be of equal size. The BASIC cascadecontroller allows the frequency converter to control up to3 equal pumps using the frequency converter’s 2 built-inrelays. When the variable pump (lead) is connected directlyto the frequency converter, the 2 built-in relays control theother two pumps. When lead pump alternations areenabled, pumps are connected to the built-in relays andthe frequency converter can operate 2 pumps.Lead pump alternationThe motors must be of equal size. This function makes itpossible to cycle the frequency converter between thepumps in the system (maximum of 2 pumps). In thisoperation, the run time between pumps is equalised, reducing the required pump maintenance and increasingreliability and lifetime of the system. The alternation of thelead pump can take place at a command signal or atstaging (adding another pump).Application Examples Design GuideMG20N602 Danfoss A/S © 09/2014 All rights reserved. 1034 4
