System Installation and Configuration96-30051-001 Rev. D3 DDN SFA12K (SFA OS 2.3.1) Hardware Installation & Configuration Guide | 3819. Storage ConfigurationThe SFA OS uses storage pools and virtual disks to configure the disk storage for use by thehost systems. A storage pool (sometimes referred to as a RAID group) is a collection of 2 to10 physical disks, ideally of the same capacity and type. Up to 1024 storage pools aresupported. A Virtual Disk (VD) is the storage unit presented to any attached host. Virtualdisks allocate space in 8 GiB increments. For example, 16 GiB of storage space will beallocated when creating a virtual disk of 10 GiB.Figure 38 illustrates the disk channels that are served by RP0 and RP1 on the SFA12Kcontrollers.19.1 Create Storage PoolsNOTE : It is NOT recommended to configure storage pools with physical disks ofdifferent capacity, as the SFA12K will use the lowest capacity for all disksand space will be wasted.1. Select Pools > Create Storage. The Create Storage Pool screen displays (Figure 39).2. Specify the attributes for the storage pool.If desired, enter an Index for the pool. The index must not be in use by any storage orspare pool.NOTE : Advanced Format pools (4K-byte block size) can only contain 4Kn diskdrives. Refer to the SFA OS User Guide for additional information.Figure 38. Disk Channels on SFA12K ControllerDisk ChannelsDisk ChannelsServed by RP0Served by RP1Figure 39. Create Storage Pool Screen
