If you are using the MicrosoftWindows 95 operating system, the functions provided bythe ISA Configuration Utility are handled by the DeviceManager, which can be accessed by double-clicking theSystem icon in the Control Panel. See your Windows 95documentation for instructions on using the Device Man-ager to manage resources and resolve conflicts.Because Dell ships only Plug and Play and PeripheralComponent Interconnect (PCI) expansion cards on DellDimension systems that have a non-Plug-and-Playoperating system, the ISA Configuration Utility is notprovided with your system. You can download a copy ofthis utility from Dell’s TechConnect Bulletin Board Ser-vice (BBS). For information on accessing theTechConnect BBS, see the chapter titled “Getting Help”in your Diagnostics and Troubleshooting Guide. The ISA Configuration Utility is used to notify the sys-tem of what expansion cards are installed and whatresources they use. With this information, the systemautomatically configures Plug and Play expansion cardsand PCI expansion cards and can tell you how to config-ure ISA expansion cards manually by setting jumpers orswitches. Plug and Play and PCI expansion cards do notcontain jumpers and switches; they are configured onlythrough software. When to Run the ISA ConfigurationUtilityWhenever you add or remove ISA expansion cards on asystem running the Windows NT operating system, youmust run the ISA Configuration Utility to ensure that notwo cards attempt to use the same resources (such asinterrupt request [IRQ] lines).Run the program before adding or removing any ISAexpansion cards. The ISA Configuration Utility can iden-tify and resolve any resource conflicts, as well as indicatethe proper jumper and switch settings for each expansioncard to avoid such conflicts. Running the program firsthelps you determine how to configure the ISA expansioncard before you install it in your computer.CAUTION: See “Protecting Against Electro-static Discharge” in the safety instructions atthe front of this guide.
