Removing and Replacing Parts 4-3Precautionary MeasuresBefore performing any of the procedures in this chapter, read the followingwarning.Follow these precautionary measures before removing or replacing any partsthat are described in this chapter:1. Determine the power state of the computer.If the display is on, go to step 2.Check the status display window to determine the status of the computer. Ifthe display is off, press the power key to verify that the computer is not insuspend or standby mode. Then proceed to step 2.2. Turn off any attached peripherals, and then shut down the computer.3. Disconnect the computer and any attached peripherals from AC powersources to reduce the potential for personal injury or shock.If the computer has an AC adapter, disconnect the adapter from the ACpower source, and then disconnect the AC adapter from the computer orfrom the port replicator (see Figures 4-3 and 4-4).WARNING FOR YOUR PERSONAL SAFETY AND PROTECTIONOF THE EQUIPMENT: Before you start to work on the computer, per-form the following steps in the sequence indicated.1. Turn off the computer and any attached peripherals.2. Disconnect the computer and any attached peripherals from ACpower sources to reduce the potential for personal injury or shock.3. Ground yourself by attaching an antistatic grounding strap to yourwrist and to an unpainted metal surface on the computer’s I/O panel.If an antistatic grounding strap is not available, periodically dis-charge static electricity from your body by touching one of theconnectors on the I/O panel.
