1-6 Dell OptiPlex Gn and Gn+ Low-Profile Systems Reference and Installation GuideEnergy Star ComplianceCertain configurations of Dell computer systems complywith the requirements set forth by the EnvironmentalProtection Agency (EPA) for energy-efficient computers. If the front panel of your computer bears the Energy StarEmblem (see Figure 1-4), your original configurationcomplied with these requirements and all Energy Starpower management features of the computer are enabled. To disable or change the operation of these features, youmust change the setting for the Power Management cate-gory in the System Setup program. For instructions, seeChapter 2, “Using the System Setup Program,” or theonline System User’s Guide.NOTES: As an Energy Star Partner, Dell Computer Cor-poration has determined that this product meets theEnergy Star guidelines for energy efficiency.Any Dell computer bearing the Energy Star Emblem iscertified to comply with EPA Energy Star requirementsas configured when shipped by Dell. Any changes youmake to this configuration (such as installing additionalexpansion cards or drives) may increase the system’spower consumption beyond the limits set by the EPA’sEnergy Star Computers program.Figure 1-4. Energy Star EmblemThe EPA’s Energy Star Computers program is a jointeffort between the EPA and computer manufacturers toreduce air pollution by promoting energy-efficient com-puter products. The EPA estimates that use of EnergyStar computer products can save computer users up totwo billion dollars annually in electricity costs. In turn, this reduction in electricity usage can reduce emissions ofcarbon dioxide, the gas primarily responsible for thegreenhouse effect, and sulfur dioxide and nitrogenoxides, which are the two primary causes of acid rain.Computer users can also help to reduce electricity usageand its side effects by turning off their computer systemswhen they are not in use for extended periods of time—particularly at night and on weekends.Important Notes to Windows 95UsersThe following subsections apply only to systems runninga Dell-installed Microsoft Windows 95 operating system.Reinstalling Windows 95Dell configured your system to optimize the MicrosoftWindows 95 operating system features. To ensure that allof these features are maintained on your system, you mustuse the version of Windows 95 that Dell installed on yourhard-disk drive. In particular, versions of Windows 95before 4.00.950 B do not contain bus-mastering EIDEsupport.Should you need to reinstall Windows 95 for any reason, you must be sure to reinstall the correct version. Dell rec-ommends performing a periodic tape backup of thesystem’s entire hard-disk drive so that, if necessary, theoperating system, drivers, and other software can be rein-stalled as originally configured, with a minimum ofdowntime. If you are unable to reinstall your software from a tapebackup of the hard-disk drive, you can reinstall Win-dows 95 from the system’s Windows 95 backup media(CD or diskettes) that you received from Dell or createdfrom the Dell-installed software on your system. How-ever, if you reinstall Windows 95 in this manner, theWindows 95 bus-mastering EIDE driver is installed butdisabled. To enable this driver, see “Bus-Mastering EIDEDrivers for Windows 95” in the online System User’sGuide. You may also need to reinstall other drivers after rein-stalling Windows 95. See “Using Utilities and Drivers”in your online System User’s Guide for more information.NOTE: If you are a network administrator of corporatenetworks and you must download Windows 95 from aserver to client systems, make sure that you have the Win-dows 95 backup media for the OptiPlex Gn or Gn+system on your server before downloading.TM
