30 About Your SystemPOST Error CodesCollecting System Event Log for InvestigationWhenever possible, the system BIOS will output the current boot progresscodes on the video screen. Progress codes are 32-bit quantities plus optionaldata. The 32-bit numbers include class, subclass, and operation information.The class and subclass fields point to the type of hardware that is beinginitialized. The operation field represents the specific initialization activity.Based on the data bit availability to display progress codes, a progress codecan be customized to fit the data width. The higher the data bit, the higherthe granularity of information that can be sent on the progress port. Theprogress codes may be reported by the system BIOS or option ROMs.The Response section in the following table may be divided into 3 types:• Warning or Not an error – The message is displayed on the screen. An errorrecord is logged to the SEL. The system will continue booting with adegraded state. The user may want to replace the erroneous unit.• Pause – The message is displayed on the screen, an error is logged to theSEL, and user input is required to continue. The user can take immediatecorrective action or choose to continue booting.• Halt – The message is displayed on the screen, an error is logged to theSEL, and the system cannot boot unless the error is resolved.
