TER0806005 Issue 1 3PCoIP Technology: A New Beginning for the Personal ComputerSystem OverviewTo create a PCoIP system, Teradici provides a two-chip solution that delivers the user’s desktop over astandard IP network. The PCoIP Host Processor is used in the centralized host PC or workstation, while thePCoIP Portal Processor is used in a small, stateless desktop “portal” appliance. Figure 1 shows datacenterequipment integration options for the PCoIP Host Processor including PC blades, workstation blades, serverblades, rackmount workstations, or tower PCs. The PCoIP Host Processor is tasked with encoding the completedesktop environment. The encoded desktop is then communicated in real time over an IP network such as anenterprise network to a PCoIP Portal Processor-enabled desktop. Now any PCoIP system user can enjoy thetrue PC user experience they are accustomed to with the security, reliability and efficiency of fully centralizedcomputing.Figure 1: PCoIP System OverviewDesktopsBlade WorkstationsBlade PC’sBlade ServersData CenterRack WorkstationsRack ServersTower WorkstationsTower ServersDual DisplayQuad DisplayIntegratedDisplayIntegratedIP PhoneMobilityEnterpriseNetworkPCoIP Host ProcessorThe PCoIP Host Processor, as shown in Figure 2 receives standard Digital Visual Interface (DVI) display datafrom the PCs graphics processor. The PCoIP Host Processor also uses a PCIe link for transparent bridging ofHD audio devices and USB peripherals. Prior to network transmission, the PCoIP Host Processor compressesthe video stream in real-time, optionally compresses the audio and combines the bridged USB traffic. Thecombined data is AES encrypted at wire-speed and sent to the network using the on-chip integrated10/100/1000 Ethernet MAC.The PCoIP Host Processor employs sophisticated image compression techniques to minimize desktop encodingsystem latency and reduce peak network bandwidth. Compared to competing technologies, the PCoIP imagecompression and transport algorithm is designed to provide the best user experience at any available networkbandwidth. The PCoIP Host Processor continuously monitors and adjusts the image compression rate to ensurethe optimal user experience for the available bandwidth. In all cases, static regions of the display image will berefined to be an exact replica of the image rendered on the host PC. This is a key requirement for visualizationapplications such as CAD or medical diagnostics.
