PCoIP Technology User Guide (Vol I) TER0806003 Issue 1© 2008 Teradici Corporation Page 7 of 253 Deployment OptionsDeployment ScenariosThere are four PCoIP Technology deploymentscenarios:• Basic 1:1 – use default configuration settingsto pair Host/Portal endpoints (limited to 1Host/Portal pair on simple network)• Manual Configuration – manually enterHost/Portal pairings (less time efficient forlarger deployments)• Management Console – simple tool toautomate pairings and management(recommended for medium sizeddeployments)• Connection Broker – 3 rd party managemententity often with extended features(recommended for large deployments)DHCP vs. Static IPHost and Portals are configured with DHCP(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) enabledby default. If connected to a DHCP server, Hostand Portal IP addresses will be dynamicallyassigned. Assigned IP address configurationinformation can be found in the NetworkWebpage (see below). When DHCP is used and default settings areused, the Host and Portal populate the DHCPserver with a hostname in the form of pcoip-host-mac.domain or pcoip-portal-mac.domain, where mac is the 6 octet deviceMAC address, and domain is the local domain. If a DHCP server is not present, the endpointswill fallback to static IP addresses (120 secondsafter startup). The static IP addresses are:• Host: 192.168.1.100• Portal: 192.168.1.50The Host and Portal will also have the followingconfiguration for fallback:• Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0• Gateway: 192.168.1.0For small deployments, it may be preferred touse static IP addresses. Static IP addresses canalso be used in a DHCP network if care is takennot to use IP addresses reserved for DHCP. Ifusing static IP addresses, it is recommended toreserve a range of network IP addresses forPCoIP Technology deployments. It is recommended to use DHCP for largerdeployments as the overhead of managing staticIP addresses can become burdensome. IfDCHP is used, it is recommended to use adiscovery mechanism to avoid ‘losing’ endpointsin an IP network (see Section 4 ).Basic 1:1The Host and Portal firmware IP addressdefaults facilitate a PCoIP Session withoutdetailed configuration. This deployment can beused when a simple remote experience isdesired with little or no endpoint management. The Basic 1:1 configuration supports thefollowing scenarios:• Direct connection from Host to Portal withsingle Ethernet cable (cross over cable notrequired)• Connection from Host to Portal via IPswitch(es)When using a direct connection without an IPswitch, the Host and Portal endpoints can not bemanaged, for example, by the AdministrativeInterface.Note: Since all endpoints fallback to the static IPaddresses above, no more than one Host/Portalpair can be used on the simple IP network. Theabove static IP addresses may also conflict withother network equipment if the fallbackaddresses are already in use.Manual ConfigurationManual pairing of Hosts and Portals are a quickand easy way to associate PCoIP Hosts andPortals for smaller deployments. When using the Administrative Interface, theNetwork and Session webpages are used formanual configuration.
