Figure 40 shows anincorrect pilot flame pattern. The incorrect pilot flame is not touchingthe thermocouple. This will cause the thermocouple to cool. When thethermocouple cools, the heater will shut down.If pilot flame pattern is incorrect, as shown in Figure 40• turn heater off (see To Turn Off Gas to Appliance, page 18[manually-controlled models] or column 1 [thermostat-con-trolled models])• see Troubleshooting, pages 22 through 24Note: The pilot flame on natural gas units will have a slight curve, but flame should be blue and have no yellow or orange color.Figure 39 - Correct PilotFlame PatternFigure 40 - Incorrect PilotFlame PatternThermocouplePilot BurnerThermocouplePilot BurnerTHERMOSTATCONTROL OPERATIONThe thermostat control knob can be set to any comfort levelbetween HI and LO. The thermostat will gradually modulate theheat output and flame height from higher to lower settings, orpilot, in order to maintain the comfort level you select. The idealcomfort setting will vary by household depending upon the amountof space to be heated, the output of the central heating system, etc.Note: Selecting the HI setting with the control knob will cause theburners to remain fully on, without modulating down in most cases.1. Follow steps 1 through 5 under Lighting Instructions, page 19.2. Depress control knob and light pilot with match.3. Keep control knob pressed in for 30 seconds after lightingpilot. After 30 seconds, release control knob. Now followstep 8, under Lighting Instructions, column 1.MANUAL LIGHTINGPROCEDUREFigure 37 - Control Knob and Ignitor Button LocationFigure 38 - PilotCAUTION: Do not try to adjust heating levels byusing the equipment shutoff valve.LOHIOFFPilotControl KnobIgnitor ButtonOPERATING HEATERContinuedTO TURN OFF GASTO APPLIANCEShutting Off HeaterTurn control knob clockwise Clockwise to the OFF position.Shutting Off Burners Only (pilot stays lit)Turn control knob clockwise Clockwise to the PILOT position.ThermocouplePilot BurnerIgnitor Electrode6. With control knob pressed in, press and release ignitor but-ton. This will light pilot. The pilot is attached to the frontburner. If needed, keep pressing ignitor button until pilot lights.Note: If pilot does not stay lit, contact a qualified serviceperson or gas supplier for repairs. Until repairs are made, light pilot with match. To light pilot with match, see ManualLighting Procedure.7. Keep control knob pressed in for 30 seconds after lightingpilot. After 30 seconds, release control knob.Note: If pilot goes out, repeat steps 3 through 7. This heaterhas a safety interlock system. Wait one (1) minute for sys-tem to reset before lighting pilot again.8. Turn control knob counterclockwise C-clockwise to desiredheating level. The burners should light. Set control knob toany heat level between HI and LO.OPERATING HEATER (Thermostatically-Controlled Models)Lighting Instructions (Cont.)To Turn Off Gas to ApplianceThermostat Control OperationManual Lighting ProcedureINSPECTING BURNERSPilot Flame Pattern
