If you op-erate heater with doors closed,heat buildup inside fireplacewill cause glass to burst. Makesure there are no obstructionsacross openings of fireplace.• You must operate this heaterwith a fireplace screen in place.Make sure fireplace screen isclosed before running heater.NOTICE: During initial operation ofnew heater, burning logs will giveoff a paper-burning smell. Opendamper or window to vent smell.This will only last a few hours.Note: Homeowners generally prefer to oper-ate their heater with the chimney damperclosed. This will put all the heat into the room.However, there may be times you will desirethe full flames of the HI heat setting but willfind the heat output excessive. You can openthe chimney damper (if you have one) fully orpartially to release some of the heat.WARNING: Damper handlewill be hot if heater has beenrunning.1. STOP! Read the safety information, col-umn 1.2. Make sure equipment shutoff valve isfully open.3. Set switch in the OFF position.WARNING: Burner will comeon automatically within oneminute when the selector switchis in the ON position after thepilot is lit.4. This appliance has a pilot which mustbe lighted by hand. When lightingthe pilot, follow these instructionsexactly.B. BEFORE LIGHTING smell all aroundthe appliance area for gas. Be sure tosmell next to the floor because somegas is heavier than air and will settleon the floor.WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS• Do not try to light any appliance.• Do not touch any electric switch; donot use any phone in your building.• Immediately call your gas supplierfrom a neighbor’s phone.
