This provides a cleanburning flame. Keep these holes clear of dust, dirt and lint. Clean these air inlet holes prior toeach heating season. Blocked air holes will createsoot. We recommend that you clean the unit everythree months during operation and have heaterinspected yearly by a qualified service person.Check pilot flame pattern and burner flamepattern often.PILOT FLAME PATTERNFigure 26 shows a correct pilot flame pattern.Figure 27 shows an incorrect pilot flame pat-tern. The incorrect pilot flame is not touchingthe thermocouple. This will cause the thermo-couple to cool. When the thermocouple cools, the heater will shut down.If pilot flame pattern is incorrect, as shownin Figure 27• turn heater off (see To Turn Off Gas to Ap-pliance, page 15)• see Troubleshooting, page 18Note: The pilot flame on natural gas units willhave a slight curve, but flame should be blueand have no yellow or orange color.WARNING: Turn off heaterand let cool before cleaning.CAUTION: You must keepcontrol areas, burner and circu-lating air passageways of heaterclean. Inspect these areas ofheater before each use. Haveheater inspected yearly by aqualified service person. Heatermay need more frequent clean-ing due to excessive lint fromcarpeting, bedding material, pethair, etc.
