The flame should not bedark or have an orange/reddish tinge.Note: When using the fireplace the first time, theflame will be orange for approximately one houruntil the log cures. If burner flame pattern is incorrect, as shown inFigure 35• turn fireplace off (see To Turn Off Gas to Ap-pliance, page 20)• see Troubleshooting, page 23THERMOSTATCONTROL OPERATIONThe thermostatic control used on this fireplacediffers from standard thermostats. Standardthermostats simply turn on and off the burner. The thermostat used on this fireplace senses theroom temperature. The thermostat adjusts theamount of gas flow to the burner. This increasesor decreases the burner flame height. At timesthe heater will cycle back on when room tem-perature drops below the set temperature. The control knob can be set to any heat levelbetween HI and LO.Note: The thermostat sensing bulb measuresthe temperature of air near the fireplacecabinet. This may not always agree withroom temperature (depending on housingconstruction, installation location, room size, open air temperatures, etc.). Frequent use ofyour fireplace will let you determine your owncomfort levels.MANUAL LIGHTINGPROCEDURE1. Follow steps 1 through 5 under LightingInstructions, page 20.2. With control knob pressed in, strike match.Hold match to pilot until pilot lights.3. Keep control knob pressed in for 30 secondsafter lighting pilot. After 30 seconds, releasecontrol knob. Now follow step 8 underLighting Instructions, page 20.INSPECTING BURNERCheck pilot flame pattern and burner flame pat-tern often.PILOT FLAME PATTERNFigure 32 shows a correct pilot flame pattern.Figure 33 shows an incorrect pilot flame pattern. The incorrect pilot flame is not properly heating thethermocouple. This will cause the thermocouple tocool. When the thermocouple cools, the fireplacewill shut down.If pilot flame pattern is incorrect, as shown inFigure 33• turn fireplace off (see To Turn Off Gas to Ap-pliance, page 20)• see Troubleshooting, page 23
