Figure 34 shows anincorrect pilot flame pattern. The incorrect pilot flame is not heatingthe thermocouple. This will cause the thermocouple to cool. When thethermocouple cools, the heater will shut down.If pilot flame pattern is incorrect, as shown in Figure 34• turn heater off (see To Turn Off Gas to Appliance, page 14• see Troubleshooting, pages 19 through 21Note: The pilot flame on natural gas units will have a slight curve, but flame should be blue and have no yellow or orange color.Thermocouple Pilot BurnerThermocouple(Variable-Manual Control Models)Figure 35 shows a correct pilot flame pattern. Figure 36 shows anincorrect pilot flame pattern. The incorrect pilot flame is not heatingthe thermocouple. This will cause the thermocouple to cool. Whenthe thermocouple cools, the heater will shut down.If pilot flame pattern is incorrect, as shown in Figure 36• turn heater off (see To Turn Off Gas to Appliance, column 1)• see Troubleshooting, pages 19 through 21Note: The pilot flame on natural gas units will have a slight curve, but flame should be blue and have no yellow or orange color.Figure 35 - Correct PilotFlame Pattern (Propane/LPShown)Figure 36 - Incorrect PilotFlame Pattern (Propane/LPShown)BURNER PRIMARY AIR HOLESAir is drawn into the burner through the holes in the fitting at theburner entrance. These holes may become blocked with dust or lint.Periodically inspect these holes for any blockage and clean ifneeded. Blocked air holes will create soot.MAIN BURNERPeriodically inspect all burner flame holes with the heater running. Allslotted burner flame holes should be open with yellow flame present. All round burner flame holes should be open with a small blue flamepresent. Some burner flame holes may become blocked by debris orrust, with no flame present. If so, turn off heater and let cool. Removeblockage. Blocked burner flame holes will create soot.Pilot BurnerThermocouple Pilot BurnerThermocoupleOPERATING HEATERTo Turn Off Gas To ApplianceManual Lighting ProcedureINSPECTING BURNERSPilot Flame PatternBurner Primary Air HolesMain BurnerOPERATING HEATERContinuedTO TURN OFF GASTO APPLIANCEShutting Off Heater1.
