Figure26 shows an incorrect pilot flame pattern. The incor-rect pilot flame is not heating the thermocouple. Thiswill cause the thermocouple to cool. When thethermocouple cools, the heater will shut down.If pilot flame pattern is incorrect, as shown in Fig-ure 26• turn heater off (see To Turn Off Gas to Appli-ance, page 15• see Troubleshooting, pages 19 through 21Note: The pilot flame on natural gas units willhave a slight curve, but flame should be blue andhave no yellow or orange color.BURNER PRIMARY AIR HOLESAir is drawn into the burner through the holes inthe fitting at the burner entrance. These holes maybecome blocked with dust or lint. Periodically in-spect these holes for any blockage and clean ifneeded. Blocked air holes will create soot.MAIN BURNERPeriodically inspect all burner flame holes withthe heater running. All slotted burner flame holesshould be open with yellow flame present. Allround burner flame holes should be open with asmall blue flame present. Some burner flame holesmay become blocked by debris or rust, with noflame present. If so, turn off heater and let cool.Remove blockage.
