If ceiling joists, roof rafters orother framing will obstruct venting system, consider an offset (see Figure 19) to avoidcutting load bearing members. Note: Payspecial attention to these installationinstructions for required clearances (airspace) to combustibles when passingthrough ceilings, walls, roofs, enclosures, attic rafters, etc. Do not pack air spaceswith insulation. Also note maximumvertical rise of venting system and anymaximum horizontal offset limitations.2. Set fireplace in desired location. Drop aplumb line down from ceiling to positionof fireplace exit flue. Mark center pointwhere vent will penetrate ceiling. Drill asmall locating hole at this point.Drop a plumb line from inside of roof tolocating hole in ceiling. Mark center pointwhere vent will penetrate roof. Drill a smalllocating hole at this point.Flat Ceiling Installation1. Cut a 11 1/2" square hole in ceiling usinglocating hole as a center point. Openingshould be framed to 11 1/2" x 11 1/2" (292 mmx 292 mm) inside dimensions, as shown inFigure 9 on page 10 using framing lumberthe same size as ceiling joists. If area aboveceiling is an insulated ceiling or an attic, nailfirestop from top side. This prevents looseinsulation from falling into required clear-ance space. If area above ceiling is a livingspace, install firestop below framed hole.Firestop should be installed with no lessthan three nails per side (see Figure 20).2. Assemble the desired lengths of pipe andelbows necessary to reach from fireplaceflue up through firestop. Be sure all pipeand elbow connections are fully twist-locked (see Figure 8, page 10).3. Cut a hole in roof using locating hole asa center point. (Cover any exposed openvent pipes before cutting hole in roof.) The11 1/2" x 11 1/2" hole must be measuredon the horizontal; actual length may belarger depending on pitch of roof. Theremust be a 1" clearance from vent pipe tocombustible materials. Frame opening asshown in Figure 9, page 10.4. Connect a section of pipe and extend upthrough hole.Note: If an offset is needed to avoidobstructions, you must support vent pipeevery 3 feet. Use wall straps for this pur-pose (see Figure 19). Whenever possible, use 45° elbows instead of 90° elbows. A45° elbow offers less restriction to the flowof flue gases and intake air.VENTING INSTALLATIONContinuedFigure 19 - Offset with Wall Strap and 45°Elbows45° ElbowWall StrapRoof FlashingCeiling FirestopFigure 20 - Installing FirestopIf area above is a living space, installfirestop below framed hole.If area above is an attic or insulated area, install firestop above framed hole.
