6 TroubleshootingDX-HD303513TroubleshootingSpecificationsI do not see theenclosure/additionaldrive in my system• Make sure the drive is functioning. A drivethat does not work in a laptop will more thanlikely not work with this enclosure either. When you connect the enclosure to the PC,you should hear the drive spin up (it may bevery faint). Contact your hard drivemanufacturer or PC manufacturer forinformation on testing your hard drive.• The enclosure may not be receiving enoughpower to spin up the hard drive. USB ports aresupposed to have a power rating of5.25V/500mA. If the system provides less than500mA per USB port, the enclosure may nothave enough power to spin up the hard drivecompletely (although the enclosure will lightup and you will hear the drive attempting tospin up).• Make sure that the USB cable is connectedfirmly to your enclosure and computer.• Make sure that the USB cable is not broken.• Open the enclosure and make sure that all ofthe connections are securely fastened.• If you have a desktop computer, try using theUSB ports on the back of the computerinstead of the front USB ports. The cablesconnecting front USB ports are not alwaysproperly shielded and may not properlyhandle USB 3.0 speeds.• Your PC may not be able to recognize thepartition on the hard drive because it isdamaged or not a valid format. You caninitialize, partition, and format unrecognizeddrives by using the software that comes withthe hard drive or by using the Disk Manager(PC users) or Disk Utilities (Mac Users).Caution: Doing this will erase any existing data onthe drive. If the drive is damaged and you wish torecover the data, continuing WILL overwrite theexisting information.• If using a new hard drive, have you formattedand partitioned the hard drive? If not, see"Partitioning and formatting a new harddrive" on page xx. If the hard drive is notformatted and partitioned, your PC will notassign a drive letter.• There are some computers that have difficultystarting with a USB hard drive connected.Unplug the hard drive, then restart yourcomputer. Once started, connect the harddrive.• Do not use non-powered USB hubs becausethey often are unable to provide enoughpower. There is a USB icon inthe system tray, but Ican't find the hard diskin MY COMPUTER• Make sure the hard drive has been initializedand partitioned if using a new hard drive. Ifyou need to do this, see "Partitioning andformatting a new hard drive" on page xx.• If you have Windows 7, you may not haverights to the files and folders and may need totake Ownership of these files and folders. Goto http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2623670for more information. The data transferbetween computer anddevice is slow• Your system may be operating at USB 2.0speeds due to an incorrect driver installationof the USB 3.0 adapter card. Or you may havea system that does not support USB 3.0. Ifyour system includes a PCIe slot, you canachieve SuperSpeed USB transfer rates byinstalling a USB 3.0 PCIe adapter card.• Make sure the enclosure is connected to aUSB 3.0 or 2.0 port. Transfer speeds areoptimal/best with your hard drive enclosure ifyou are using USB 3.0 ports. Data throughputis greatly affected by the type and location ofdata on the disk. A few very large files willcopy much faster than many small files sincethe larger files are more likely to be arrangedsequentially on the disk.• Magnetic Hard Disk Drives operate at speedsslower than the USB 3.0's maximum datatransfer rate. If using an HDD, your transferspeeds will be faster on USB 3.0 than on USB2.0, but will still be limited by the phyiscaldisk's throughput. The data on my harddrive is corrupt!• Connecting your hard drive to the enclosure isjust like connecting a hard drive to the insideof your computer. The enclosure itself will notcorrupt your data. If data has become corrupt,it is likely caused by removing the enclosurewhile data was still being written to the harddrive, from subjecting the drive to some kindof physical trauma (even very subtle trauma),or due to a design or quality issue with theoriginal drive manufacturer.Caution: Never remove the enclosure while datais being written to the hard drive! Doing so maycause the hard drive to become corrupt. Makesure all applications being run off the disk and allfiles in use are no longer in use before removingthe unit. For PCs, use the Safely Remove Hardwareicon to eject the drive before disconnecting. ForMac, drag the hard drive to the trash beforedisconnecting. Never operate the disk andenclosure in a partially assembled state. Can I boot from theenclosure?• This enclosure does not support using theenclosed disk drive as a boot device. Why can't I partition orformat my drive?• Verify that you are logged into the computerwith an account that has AdministratorRights. If that does not resolve the issue, contact your hard drive manufacturer or PCmanufacturer for assistance. My hard drive is 2TB,are there any uniqueissues?• Make sure you have the latest Service Packinstalled on Windows XP. With the latestService Pack, Windows XP, Windows Vista, andWindows 7 should recognize up to a 2TBdrive.Is RAID or JBODsupported?• NoWhy do I keep seeing8 GB of hard drive space(no partition)?• This is most likely because this space waseither not partitioned or initialized when thehard drive was formatted. Another reason isthat when the hard drive has been removedimproperly, a ghost drive can be created onthe computer which confuses the computerinto thinking there is still usable space. It isbest to turn off the enclosure and reboot yoursystem. Can I use the hard driveenclosure with a Macand a PC at the sametime?• No, the hard drive must be initialized andpartitioned for one or the other. Whenformatted for Mac, a PC will not be able to seethe partition, and vice versa.Device interface SATA I or SATA IIDimensions (WxLxH) 1.22 x 4.96 x 8.07 in (3.1 x 12.6 x 20.5 cm)Host interface USB 3.0 B typePower supply AC adaptorHDD supportsUp to 3 TB 3.5” SATA HDD (WindowsVista and Windows 7)Up to 2 TB 3.5” SATA HDD (Windows XP)Maximum height is 1.03 in (2.61 cm)Operating temperature Operating: 32~104°F (0~40°C)Operating humidity 20% to 80% non-condensingCertificate FCC Class B, ICES-003 |
